Post If the ruler dies, what's next?
Salam Alykom All:

I would like to share an interesting and nice article from Aljazeerah that very well applies to the Yemeni future. Of course, our president will not let go of the "majestic chair" until the Angel of Death comes into the picture.

http://www.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/4433 ... A6F48A.htm

Government Change in Yemen will take place only when the current one is thrown away or at least the President is changed; and as I mentioed that'll only happen when the President dies (which i think is close given his advanced age :-) ).

So, suppose the president is really out of the picture and a new president and perhaps a new government takes over, the real question now is:
What's next?

Are we really going to be better off as citizens of Yemen? Or is the damage the previous government has done over the past 1/2 century is too much to be fixed by a new government? Are we really doomed forever? What should people expect from a new government?

Quote:

.

A number of obstacles are mentioned in the article, but I want to mention one more. To me, the most difficult thing any new government will face is the deteriorated ethical standards & competence of the current employees in all kinds of governmental institutions. They have grown so used to bribes and stealing from the state's funds that they don't view them as negative acts anymore! They have grown used to not think constructively and to take their responsibilities seriously. They're smart when it come to deceipt, but rather dumb when it comes to think about something good for their country.

I think that the quality of the people (which the previous regime has created over the years) is the hardest obstacle in the face of any future change. Of course, this is besides what the article talks about.

I finish with this beautiful quote from the article:

Quote:

What next? in very basic and broad terms. Our country is likely to go into a chaotic state. I think a lot of people will leave their villages, towns and go into sana'a. A lot of tribes will try and gain some sort of new power now that he's dead.

Following a lot of uncalled for blood shed our, if its done the way we Yemenis like to get things done in our current military state, Ahmed will be successor to the throne! Then others will start moaning and getting all greedy. They will ask for a more democratic state, however with their ulterior motives, a new abdullah s*l*h era is born HURRAH!

Alternatively, following some foreign intervention an iraq/somali failure type government will form...YAY!!!

Im not mocking you're topic, but just trying to comically highlight how miserable the future of Yemen is likely to be given the submissive nature of Yemeni people. Unfortunately Yemeni's educated fall into categories (apologies if you're a one off exception): saleh loyalists enjoying his blessings and in Yemen, anti-saleh and abroad, and finally in sana'a anti-saleh's silent nulls.

Salut!

Thanks, Mona for ur reply.

What I mean is: even if the regime changes, no significant positive change will occur unless people have changed their ways of thinking and dealing with each other.

Next will be: the president's clan will have clashes with the tribes over the ruling party. Keep in mind that yemen is not one country its more than one country also armed. Lacking/avoiding the law will have many government officials fight over the chair such as the president's son...and others.
